Fair and cloudy.

Got a bill for our furniture and the freight will be $86 and total cost $122. Ought to be here soon. Monkeyed around in A.M. Started to make a fly trap in aft. To library in eve - read and got "The Gentleman From Indiana" By Booth Tarkington and an "American" magazine. Took back "The Reckoning" which I finished - pretty good.

This was a popular magazine of the day and described as
 "filled with scantily clad showgirls and tales of murder and suspense."

Hard shower A.M. fair and cloudy.

Read several article in American Magazine - it is a fine magazine. Finished my fly trap. Got Clint's lawn mower in aft. and we cut all grass around here. Rode over to Randolph Fruit Co. and got $2.70 for the lemon sorting I did (20 cents per hour). Rode town and got groceries and meat and sold 1 doz. eggs 17 cents. Read in eve. 6 eggs.

Cold and windy - cloudy. A little touch of Minnesota weather lately - gives me a touch of homesickness once in a while.

The last few days I have been monkeying with my violin a little - can play about as bad as ever. Shut up 3 young roosters to fat and kill this A.M. In aft I drove Ma downtown to look at some furniture on sale. Ma and Pa to meeting in eve and Grandpa and I played H.L.J.Q - I beat 2 out of 3. I got a letter from Lowell Daggett (in my graduating class) today. He is in L.A. and is working for the L.A. County collecting fossil in San Pedro for the museum of Expo park of which his uncle is the director. I answered it this eve. 9 eggs

Worked around, round down to lumber yard and got some half round and put it on 2 screens. Tinted part of back , Rain in eve. Read in my book "The Reckoning" 7 eggs

Sun and cloudy  - sprinkled 2 or 3 times

Sold a dozen eggs at butcher shop this A.M. for 18 cents and bought 1 pound butter at 37 cents. Monkeyed around. Pa finishing up tinting. Cleaned up the auto in aft. rode down and got some groceries. Read in eve. 9 eggs. I weigh 125 now.

Hard rain last night. Cloudy and sunny all day. Fine afternoon.

Left here about 8 A.M. and drove to Sierra Madre and visited the folks there awhile [this is my Grandfather's Uncle Albert, his mother's brother, and his wife and kids]. I drove them (Al, Ana, Minnie) to the episcopal church, then Ma, Pa, Dot, Anabelle and I went into the congregational church next door to hear the preacher we heard in Santa Ana once and liked so well. Lewellyn, Anabelle, Dot, Pa and I drove around a little after church and stooped and brought Tru, Al, Ana, and Minnie home. True is half and inch shorter than I am, but weighs quite a bit more - has long pants and looks quite a man. He has an appointment to Annapolis and is going there soon. 

We did not stop there for dinner as we had to go to Ethel's - arrived there about two and had a lunch as they had eaten. Visited all aft and eve and left for Anaheim about 8:30. Home 10:30. Grand came back. 7 eggs.

Fine and warm

Grand and I cut potatoes - Pa painting the walls. Then I plowed with the small plow and Grand plant about 3/4 sack of spuds. I rode down and got the mail (holiday and they didn't deliver) Ethel sent us the pictures that I left with her to have developed and they are good. Took a bath after dinner - then down and heard the Anaheim band play at the library. In eve Grand, Pa and I played 500.Played all eve but could not finish the game so we'll have to continue some other eve. 6 eggs

Pa painting living and dining room walls all day. I worked around outside. To library in eve and I got "The Reckoning" by Robert Chambers also a magazine, read papers and magazine and home. 10 eggs

Fine and moderate

Grand and I drove down and got paint for the kitchen, stain for bedroom floors, and tint for bedrooms. I also got groceries and meat and sold 1 dozen eggs at market for 18 cents. Home and I worked around. Helped Pa tint in afternoon and we tinted one bedroom and the kitchen and stained floors of 2 bedrooms. Read in eve. Pa to a river protection meeting at the High School. Cool enough in eve and A.M. lately to have a little fire in the airtight. 11 eggs

Fine and not so hot

Worked around a little. Rode down and got a sewing machine crate, brought it up, put machine in, and shipped it. They [May and cousins] up for lunch and Ma and I took them down to the train and they left to The Springs. In afternoon I bought some copper tubing and put a gas saver on the auto - not quite finished yet. I rode down in the eve and got groceries and meat. 

9 eggs today. We now have 17 hens. We planted a little patch of potatoes today also. Eggs are worth about 20 cents now and were 40 cents a week or two ago.

Dull and cool

Finished my gas saver which is a copper tube from the carburetor around the exhaust pipe 3 times and then up by the steering column. Don't know how much gas it will save yet - I don't think the pipe is quite large enough to do much good. They are putting sewer in the street and we can't get out with the auto so only Pa went to church as mother did not have any good walking shoes. I rode down and bought a paper and we read all day. In afternoon I went down to the library for an hour or so and read papers. I slept with Grandpa last night. 10 eggs.

Mon. Feb. 21, 1916

Rain last night. Sunny and fairly cool today

Dug potatoes off and on all day. Pa and Grand walked down and bought some paint for the walls (like Kalsomine - Bradley's Wall Finish). They painted part of the front bedroom. Pa and I filled the sewer ditch and I drove down about 5:30 and got groceries and meat. We plowed ground where potatoes were this eve and we are going to put some more in. Read etc in eve. 10 eggs

Fine and fairly hot

Up at 6 A.M. and worked all day at Packing House (10 hours) sorting lemons. At noon May etc. were here at lunch. In eve we drove over to Root's and took them over to May's and we all played card etc. Grandpa and I vs. Mrs Root and May each got 1 game and then Pa and Root beat May and I 1 game, both whist. Home and to bed. 6 eggs

Thurs. Feb. 17, 1916

Fine and Mod. hot.

Worked from 7 - 10:30. then home and helped Pa and Grandpa start a shed on the back of the garage. In afternoon I went down and got a haircut and then up to May's and took Clinton bike down to [unclear word] to have it shipped - Gertie rode her's down too. Home and worked some more. Then we drove down town, May also - got groceries etc. Then Grandpa, Pa, and I out about 1 mile and bought a sack of potatoes for seed. May etc. here for Supper. In eve we went down to her place and I was going to take Gertie, Toots, and 2 other kids to the show (Mary Pickford), but crowded and could not get in so I took kids for a little ride - then sat and listened to phonograph at May's for a while and then us home. 7 eggs

Fri. Feb. 18, 1916

Fine and quite hot

Worked (Pa, Grand, and I) on the shed all day and finished it. Took the partition out of the garage so it is fine and large now and you can drive in at 30 and still not go thru the back wall. 

May to the city all day and the kids up here. I cleaned up and drove down and met here at 5 P.M. got some groceries and they here for supper after that I drove May around a little - then over and brought Root's over and we visited and Root and I lost 2 games of whist from Grand and Pa. Drove them back and then brought Ma and Pa and 5 hen's of May's up to our house at 10:30 P.M. Bed. 5 hen fruit. Garden up now.

Foggy A.M. Ideal rest of day.

Up at 6:30 and left about 8 for Hollywood. Went a new way via Norwalk, but a bridge was out so we had to run up to Whittier and on the regular road. Arrived there about 10 read and talked in A.M. in afternoon we all (Ethel driving) went to Redondo and back. Went down on the beach at Clifton's-By-The-Sea and got 2 sacks of chicken grit and fine heavy surf. Then we went down to the bath house for awhile then we went home, cutting across the city thru a magnificent residential district. Talked etc all eve. and left for home 9 P.M. are here at 10:40. Fine warm moonlight night. Chickens laid 7 eggs - 2 small ones from our 2 pullets, so that makes 12 hens that should lay.

Mon. Feb. 14, 1916

Fine regular California day. Pretty hot.

I worked all A.M. putting covers on my chicken feed boxes. In afternoon I pounded up the shells I got Sunday and made some grit for the chickens. Also trimmed up 2 palm trees. Then Pa and I pushed and pulled the one horse cultivator (with two teeth off) over the patch where we are going to plant potatoes. May, Gertie, and Toots [I think this is wife and children of Uncle Clint] dropped in tonight. They are down for 2 or 3 days. We visited here awhile and then at their house awhile. Then home - read a little and to bed. 4 eggs.

Tues. Feb. 15, 1916

Fine and hot.

Worked around here a little in A.M. Got a letter from Lillian Crane. About 9:30 I went down to May's and worked around their yard, pruning trees etc. Grandpa came down at 10 A.M. and in afternoon we all ( May etc) drove out to their ranch and then to Fullerton to the nursery for her to order some fruit trees. While there a Dodge, driven by a high school student, ran into a kid on a bike who was ahead and didn't know which way to turn. Smashed the bike up a little and threw the kid along the pavement, but did not run over him. Pa, Ma, and I ran out to him, but in a few minutes he was alright and the other fellow took he and his bike into town. On way back I stopped at packing house and told them I would work tomorrow as they requested today over the phone via Harner's. I took May and kids over to Root's for supper and in the eve we drove down and Root and I beat Pa and Grand 2-1 at 500. Grandpa staying at May's tonight

Foggy

Fed our 16 chickens, 4 roosters (3 young), 3 small pullets and the rest hens. Pa and I dug potatoes rest of A.M. In afternoon we plowed with the hand plow - 1 pullie and 1 pushy. Plowed a space in back garden 20X40 and then took the single harrow, meant for a horse, and dragged that over it. Then we took some stuff over to the dump in the auto (Pa drove) and back by town so I could buy some rim cement for my tire, which is loose. Got 3 eggs today. I to library in eve and read papers and magazines.

Foggy except late afternoon.

We put in carrots, turnips, onions, celery, and peas this A.M. We drove to town this afternoon and got groceries. In eve we drove to Elliot's and visited there till 9:30. Home and to bed.

I rode down in A.M. and bought some seeds and Pa and I put them in today - Peas, beans, onions, tomatoes, beets and head lettuce. I also made a hot bed to raise tomato plants in. 3 eggs. To meeting in eve.

Feb. 4 - 6, 1916

 Fri. Feb. 4, 1916

Bank at corner of Los Angeles St. and Center St. that my Grandfather's Father crashed into, twice.

Fine and warm

Slept pretty good with Grandpa last night. Rode over to Packing house at 7:45, but no work. Home and made a drawer with compartment for nails, screws, etc. About 11 A.M. Pa and Grandpa drove downtown to send money for our furniture and had the auto standing in front of the bank on corner of Los Angeles and Center Streets, facing the curb. When he started it the car jumped the curb and smacked into the door casing of the bank for he had left it in gear I guess. Then he backed up and could not stop it for some reason or other , and back around the corner into the Los Angeles street door. - He couldn't get in one so he tried the other. He broke the front door casing but did not hurt the other. They got it  fixed up this afternoon so I guess it won't cost very much. In afternoon I drove Grandpa down and he took stage for L.A. and then I cleaned the garage, sort over nails and put them in my new drawer. Got 2 eggs today from 3 hens and rooster. Played 2 games (1 each) H.L.J with Pa and to Library rest of evening.

Fine and warm, warmer nights now too.

Worked around all day. I have got the chicken farm idea hard now and if I go to college it will probably be the state agricultural. Read in "orchard and Farm" and the paper in evening. Dug some potatoes and picked oranges and lemons to take up to Ethel's tomorrow.

Fine and warm

Up at 6 A.M. and left for Hollywood at 7:45. Very Foggy from Fullerton to Whittier. Montebello bridge fixed now so drove straight thru to cemetery. Then up to Pasadena and via Foothill blvd. to Hollywood. We 3 and Floyd went to the Christian Science Service - big crowd. 

Santa Monica Beach 1915

In afternoon Ethel drove us to Santa Monica and we walked about a mile down the beach picking shells, stones, etc. Took 2 pictures then drove home via Pico blvd. got home about 4 P.M. then Pa, Floyd and I hiked up the mountain to the highest nearby peaks and got home about 6:30. Caught 12 chicken and put them in boxes for us to take down to the ranch. Ethel has got a beaux - a Mr. Fly who called on her last week and is going to call again tomorrow. 

Left about 7:30 and got home here a little after 9. - Very foggy most of the way and could hardly follow the road. Read a chapter or 2 in my bible as usual and to bed.

Feb. 1 - 3, 1916

Fine. Up at 8 and rode down and got some tape and then Pa and I put the new fixtures in the living and dining room and S chain group and a dome. In the afternoon I worked from 1 - 6. Grandpa came down late this afternoon and is going to stay all night. Read in eve.

Wed. Feb. 2, 1916

Fine and warm.

Up at 6 A.M. and to work. Slept with Grandpa last night. Worked from 7A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Pa drove out to a place with Grandpa this A.M. and got a sack of cull walnuts for 50 cents and they are alright. In afternoon I drove Grand and Pa to town and then we all drove around toward Placentia and Olive to show Grandpa the flood damage. Fed the chickens - we got an egg 2 days ago and 1 today from our 3 hens. Read and in the evening we were invited to the Root's, but we had promised to take a lady that lives near here down to meeting so Ma and Pa went and Grandpa and I to Root's then I got them after meeting and we all at Root's. Root and I and Grandpa and Mrs. Root each beat a game of 500 and then Pa came and he beat Root several games of checkers. Home 10:30. grandpa here again tonight.

Thurs. Feb. 3, 1916

Fine and warm.

Saw an eclipse of the sun early this A.M. Grandpa, Pa and I worked all A.M. Tearing down some fences around the garden etc. About noon I rode over to packing H. - do not have to work today. In afternoon we drove down town and Grandpa bought some screen wire, screen paint, brush, a hammer, coffee pot and can opener. Worked around some more.

This evening Grandpa gave Pa $86 to send back to Minneapolis to pay for storage, drayage, and shipping our furniture out here and Pa is going to send for it tomorrow. Read and talked and to bed. Grandpa not going to Hollywood until tomorrow.

I worked all day grading - oranges were pretty good today so all we had to do was to stand there and watch them roll by. Got a letter from Walt. Read in eve.

Sun. Jan. 30, 1916

Fine sunny fairly warm

Pa and I washed the auto. I took a bath and then we went to the Christian Science Church. Mr. Worsley and his family were there - also quite a crowd. We were invited to Roots for dinner and in the afternoon we took them out for a ride up into Brea Canyon so far as the pavement went. It was fine - sunny grand. Read all eve.

Up at 6 A.M. went over to the packing house - do not have to work till 1 P.M. so came home. Took the auto down got some groceries and the new electric light fixture that grandpa bought in L.A. at the Ex. store. Then Pa and I spent the rest of A.M.in getting ready to put them up. I worked from 1 - 5 P.M. Read in eve and we played 2 games of 500 and I beat both. Stew sent me two copies of the "West High Weekly," A newspaper of which he is manager. Hard East wind all day and quite cool.
