  1. Cool. Antwerp and the Belgian resistance was key to WWI as a whole. The Schlieffen plan (German operational plan at the start of the war) was to quickly run through Belgium and overwhelm French forces in the first days of the war and before the Russians could mobilize to create a second front. The Belgians put up an unexpectedly fierce fight and delayed the German for weeks. That gave the French and British enough time to prepare for the Battle of the Marne which is pretty much where German forward momentum stopped for the rest of the war. Trench warfare began at this point. The Russians also mobilized much more quickly than the Germans predicted. The future of the war was in many ways set by the first couple of weeks in Belgium. The Belgian king, who led his forces and fought from a slice of held ground throughout the war while the queen worked as a field nurse, tried to broker a "no victors, no vanquished" peace, but both sides turned it down: decisions which had pretty horrific consequences.

  2. Do you think the comment about rattling the bones refers to dicing? Did you notice the sign advertising Burlesk? The spelling has certainly been spruced up since then.

  3. In my research I've seen lots of crazy spellings of both Burlesque and Vaudeville. It must have taken them awhile to nail it down.
