Fine and warm

I rode down in A.M. and got paper. Root's heard that Al had a store in L.A. on Moneta Ave, but we haven't heard anymore about it yet. Read all day - Mother in bed with the piles. She slept in my bed last night and Pa and I together and Pa had to be up with her quite a little. I wrote a line to Ethel in the evening telling her the news.

There was a big 300 mile race at Corona yesterday and Bob Burman, his mechanic, and a special policeman were killed when a tire blew out - 5 spectators were injured. It was so hot that no records were made - 85 miles per hour.

I in my own bed tonight. 10 eggs

Author note: According to wiki "Bob Burman's death caused his friends Barney Oldfield and Harry Arminius Miller to join forces to build a race car that incorporated a roll cage inside a streamlined driver's compartment that completely enclosed the driver. It was called the Golden Submarine."

 Wed. March 29, 1916

Possible Grandfather in talking about Charles Chapman, in this entry, who was a well respected orange grower, first Mayor of Fullerton, and the person Chapman University is named for.

Dull A.M. Fine Aft.

Worked on my fiddle top. Painted my chair a 2nd coat. We all and Mrs. Harner drove down to Water Co to see about pipe line. Then drove out to Anaheim Fruit Growers Assn for Pa to try to get a job. Then took a ride thru Chapman's place. The Pa, Grand , and I dug up some pipe in orchard. In eve I drove them and Mrs. Hong down to meeting and was going to get them, but curfew did not ring and I was late - They called Harner's and I hurried down and brought them home. 9 eggs

The Chapman ranch property, consisting of nearly 500 acres in its prime, contained both walnut groves and America’s oldest Valencia orange trees. Mr. Chapman developed new techniques for grading and marketing this particular variety of orange, and by the 1920s Charles Chapman was widely known as “the father of the Valencia orange industry.”

Redondo Beach Bath House, Casino and Auditorium, California

Foggy A.M. Ideal rest of day.

Up at 6:30 and left about 8 for Hollywood. Went a new way via Norwalk, but a bridge was out so we had to run up to Whittier and on the regular road. Arrived there about 10 read and talked in A.M. in afternoon we all (Ethel driving) went to Redondo and back. Went down on the beach at Clifton's-By-The-Sea and got 2 sacks of chicken grit and fine heavy surf. Then we went down to the bath house for awhile then we went home, cutting across the city thru a magnificent residential district. Talked etc all eve. and left for home 9 P.M. are here at 10:40. Fine warm moonlight night. Chickens laid 7 eggs - 2 small ones from our 2 pullets, so that makes 12 hens that should lay.

Grandpa, Clinton Jr. and Gertie at "The Springs"

Fine regular California day. Pretty hot.

I worked all A.M. putting covers on my chicken feed boxes. In afternoon I pounded up the shells I got Sunday and made some grit for the chickens. Also trimmed up 2 palm trees. Then Pa and I pushed and pulled the one horse cultivator (with two teeth off) over the patch where we are going to plant potatoes. May, Gertie, and Toots [I think this is wife and children of Uncle Clint] dropped in tonight. They are down for 2 or 3 days. We visited here awhile and then at their house awhile. Then home - read a little and to bed. 4 eggs.

Tues. Feb. 15, 1916

Downtown Fullerton, Spadra (now Harbor Blvd.). I was born a couple of blocks from here on Ameriage Street in 1953.
Downtown Fullerton likely around the time my grandpa was there.

Fine and hot.

Worked around here a little in A.M. Got a letter from Lillian Crane. About 9:30 I went down to May's and worked around their yard, pruning trees etc. Grandpa came down at 10 A.M. and in afternoon we all ( May etc) drove out to their ranch and then to Fullerton to the nursery for her to order some fruit trees. While there a Dodge, driven by a high school student, ran into a kid on a bike who was ahead and didn't know which way to turn. Smashed the bike up a little and threw the kid along the pavement, but did not run over him. Pa, Ma, and I ran out to him, but in a few minutes he was alright and the other fellow took he and his bike into town. On way back I stopped at packing house and told them I would work tomorrow as they requested today over the phone via Harner's. I took May and kids over to Root's for supper and in the eve we drove down and Root and I beat Pa and Grand 2-1 at 500. Grandpa staying at May's tonight

Fog A.M. fine and warm most of day.

Drove 4 miles out county road to buy some cheap potatoes, but they were no good. Back and bought 3 gas, groceries, and meat also 40# bean which is $1.30 per sack and 6# beef scrap for 25 cents and 2 # charcoal for 10 cents to mix with it to make for a dry mash. For a scratch feed we bought 50# coffir corn at $1.85 per 100# and 25# of wheat $2.20 per 100# which we will mix together and feed instead of ready mixed stuff at $1.35 per 100. I cleaned the chicken house some in the afternoon, fixed boxes for the feed and mixed it. Then made a trough and fed the chickens some of the bran. Then polished the auto all up. Read in evening and took a bath. 4 eggs. Gas is 17 1/2 cents now. We now have 10 hens. 2 pullets about 5 mos. old, and 4 roosters (3 young).
