Fine and Quiet. I feel H.T.C [Harold Truman Crane] again. Decided to hatch and sell broilers - think I can make $75  or so a month. I'm going to make my own brooders and raise chicks without heat. I cleaned the hen house and started to fix up the incubator.

Drove Mr. and Miss Harner to town and for a ride to Placentia - then brought Ethel home from work. Floyd and I to library in eve.

 ThursOct. 7, 1915

Cooler - little fog in A.M. Cleaned hen house some more and fixed incubator. Cut and planted potatoes in afternoon. Drove Miss Harner down. Aunt Ethel has rented an apartment near Santa Fe depot and we all drove down there in the eve to look at it - 2 rooms nice. Floyd and I play H.L.J.Q and to bed.

Fri. Oct. 8, 1915

Fine and Moderate. Worked around. Mother cleaned out some and I noon I took Ethel's thing down. Got my bike in running order. Grandpa, Mr. and Mrs. Harner and I  went and looked for eggs for hatch but couldn't find enough of the heavy breeds. I rode down to Floyd's in eve - around town - home. Read in "Quo Vadis" and to bed.

Oct. 4, 1915

Mon. Oct. 4, 1915

Santa Barbara circa 1915
(it's about 120 miles from Anaheim to Santa Barbara meaning they were traveling at about 30 mph)

I have been at the Springs for over a month. Clint got Grandpa to go to the Spring and we were going to leave Fri. Aug. 27 A.M. but we were at the band concert here and such a fine evening we decide to leave Thurs. night. So got ready and started out 11:30 P.M. 5 in the auto and about a ton of luggage so that we couldn't move. Ethel drove half way and Clint half (bum driver). I was going to drive some but did not get a chance after he got a hold of it. Got to Santa Barbara about 5 A.M. - Then came very bad roads and hot as blazes in Mountains.

Driving to the Springs

Got to Springs about 2:30 P.M. Mother first one to greet us. Honey and Gertie not changed much. Saturday us kids went over to the beach and gathered stones all A.M. The first few days I used Grandpa's auto and did errands - taking school teachers into town and from school etc - because spring broke on Clint's car.

San Luis Obispo 1907

Monday Clint offered me job of tending baths and I took it $25 a month and board. The folks (Grandpa, Ethel, Floyd) went home and Mother and I stayed. I met quite a few people there - Mr. and Mrs. McCarmack S.F., The teachers Miss McGovern and Spain, The old ladies Miss Green and Miss Pots and Gertie Brady of San Bernadino. The waitress (719 Sandercock Street, San Luis Obispo).

There was an auto accident there - boy driving 5 passengers overland and went over bank 1 block from hotel. Clint, Elmer and I were first ones there and I pulled dead man from under the car.

We got a telegram from Pa that he could sell out. Mother left for Anaheim to talk with Grandpa Sun. Sept. 25th. I stayed and got a telegram from her Wed. to come down so I did that afternoon and got here at 1 A.M. Thurs. Kind of sick on train - threw up. Sick Thursday a little and sick ever since - Stomach out of order and head dizzy. Better now but not strong.

Sunday we 5 drove to Long Beach. Ethel is working at S.Q.R. store. Mother told pa to sell out - we have got the deed here but she is waiting for an understanding with Pa as to what he intends to do etc.

Today I drove down and got a haircut, bought Gem safety razor and got groceries. Foggy quite late every A.M. except Sunday last

Clint to city early. Rec'd letter from Mother. Last evening Clint asked us to drive up to the Springs and we are going to. Floyd and I greased the universal joints and tightened the emergency etc. In aft we drove down and I had the front wheels trued up and got some oil for the gear box - put it in after we got home. I drove down and met Clint at 6:30 and he had supper here. In eve I drove he and Grandpa downtown and around. I have to pack and ship 3 boxes of oranges to the Springs tomorrow for Clint. Talked - Clint down to his house and we to bed.

Did not go to church as I do not care about any of them here particularly. In the aft. I drove the folks in the mountains past Orange County Park and back by Olive. Grandpa was going to take Harner's, but they didn't feel well etc. He was going to take them for a ride when we got back, but they had company. I wrote a letter to Mother and sent some land ads to Pa and Floyd and I walked down and mailed them in the eve.
Read and to bed.

Got letter and postal from Mother and forwarded a letter to her from Pa. She said Clint had a job for me taking care of baths, but I have no money to go up there and do not know if he would give me decent wages or not so not going just yet. Grandpa wanted me to rent a piece of ground with option to buying it, and start raising chickens - he would give me the incubator here, but I am going to wait awhile yet and see if Pa can't sell out. Fixed up the front yard. Bought some grease for the auto and greased it up. In the eve Floyd and I walked to the library.

He drove down from the Springs with a man. Visited for awhile, then he went and came back for supper. In eve we all drove to his ranch and then he took us to the show. Then went up to his house and talked and then home.

Fri. Aug. 20, 1915

The boys in their irrigation costume and their "selfie" string

Wrote a card to mother and got a letter from her also. Changed to my pants (rolled up) and my swimming shirt and I irrigated from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. Did it up good and when we were eating supper Grandpa gave Floyd and I 50 cents apiece. I clipped Grandpa's hair and rode downtown and monkeyed around. Floyd and I took a picture of ourselves with a string in our irrigation costume.

Author note: The 50 cents their grandfather gave in today's money would be a almost $13.

Downtown Anaheim 1914

Up at 5:30 and picked 50 pounds of peaches - Floyd delivered them. I went up to irrigate - water came at 7 o'clock and irrigated until 11 A.M. Foggy until about 11 today, but fine after that.

Rec'd two letters from Mother and one from Pa. Mother said that she was dazed since arriving at the springs - seemed so funny to do nothing but eat, sleep and enjoy herself - an experience she has never had. Pa has not sold out yet, but is very anxious to sell and come out here. Got a small puncture in my bike last evening. Floyd and I delivered 20 pounds of fruit and collected some money.

In the evening we drove downtown and all 4 went to the Mason Theatre. I wrote a letter to Pa and one to Mother today. Pa said that Katheryn Graves had called up and inquired after me. Said she had been on vacation. I guess I will write to her.

Mon. Aug. 16, 1915

Delivered 70 pounds plums this A.M. then Floyd and I rode down on my bike and took orders for about 110 pounds more. Delivered over 120# of apples, peaches, plums and prunes in the afternoon.

Tues. Aug 17, 1915

Delivered fruit and took orders with the auto all A.M. Delivered some more in the aft. Have sold and delivered about 700 pounds or more of fruit now. Read in eve.

Wed. Aug 18, 1915

Aunt Ethel to the city at 7 o'clock. Floyd and I pick and delivered about 120 of 30 pounds of fruit. I got a letter from Mother yesterday and today. She certainly likes The Springs, so quiet and restful and she will have a good rest. I wrote a letter to Lillian Gregg and also one to Pa yesterday and write one to Mother everyday.

Floyd and I del. more fruit in Grandpa has made up with the Harner's again. I was going downtown on bike, but Miss Harner asked if we were going in the auto and Grandpa said yes. Went for a ride out County road and home. Ethel home 5 o'clock. Went up and shoveled for irrigating. In eve Floyd and I took a ride on my bike in the moonlight.

I got a Studebaker instruction book the other day and have been greasing the neglected spots on the car lately. Today Floyd and I drained the oil out and strained it and I tightened the emergency. Then we washed and polished it. I then took a cold bath and in the evening Aunt Ethel, Floyd and I went to The Fairyland.
