Santa Barbara circa 1915 (it's about 120 miles from Anaheim to Santa Barbara meaning they were traveling at about 30 mph) |
I have been at the Springs for over a month. Clint got Grandpa to go to the Spring and we were going to leave Fri. Aug. 27 A.M. but we were at the band concert here and such a fine evening we decide to leave Thurs. night. So got ready and started out 11:30 P.M. 5 in the auto and about a ton of luggage so that we couldn't move. Ethel drove half way and Clint half (bum driver). I was going to drive some but did not get a chance after he got a hold of it. Got to Santa Barbara about 5 A.M. - Then came very bad roads and hot as blazes in Mountains.
Got to Springs about 2:30 P.M. Mother first one to greet us. Honey and Gertie not changed much. Saturday us kids went over to the beach and gathered stones all A.M. The first few days I used Grandpa's auto and did errands - taking school teachers into town and from school etc - because spring broke on Clint's car.
Monday Clint offered me job of tending baths and I took it $25 a month and board. The folks (Grandpa, Ethel, Floyd) went home and Mother and I stayed. I met quite a few people there - Mr. and Mrs. McCarmack S.F., The teachers Miss McGovern and Spain, The old ladies Miss Green and Miss Pots and Gertie Brady of San Bernadino. The waitress (719 Sandercock Street, San Luis Obispo).
There was an auto accident there - boy driving 5 passengers overland and went over bank 1 block from hotel. Clint, Elmer and I were first ones there and I pulled dead man from under the car.

I stayed and got a telegram from her Wed. to come down so I did that afternoon and got here at 1 A.M. Thurs. Kind of sick on train - threw up. Sick Thursday a little and sick ever since - Stomach out of order and head dizzy. Better now but not strong.
S.Q.R. Store interior in Anaheim |
Sunday we 5 drove to Long Beach. Ethel is working at S.Q.R. store. Mother told pa to sell out - we have got the deed here but she is waiting for an understanding with Pa as to what he intends to do etc.
Today I drove down and got a haircut, bought Gem safety razor and got groceries. Foggy quite late every A.M. except Sunday last
